This project involves the study of the use of Vertigo’s microwave-based non-invasive sensor for evaluation of internal quality of apples near-harvest and during storage. To do that they collaborate with WUR in the Netherlands and the WTFRC in the US. The first tests in the Netherlands recently started, showing very promising initial performances in the prediction of several quality attributes for Dutch varieties like Elstar and Gala. Starting from January 2024, Vertigo will expand the operation to Washington State, by providing WTFRC with a sensor and train them the relevant operators in order to start testing on both sides of the ocean, covering different varieties of apples. Vertigo expects that by summer 2024 they will have a first working model for in-storage apples, and to expand it to near-harvest by the end of 2024.
