In the future, fruit-growing companies will not be able to flourish without precision applications. These applications are needed to make cultivation more sustainable at the same time optimizing production.

For this reason, a lot of new precisions technology had been developed for and in cooperation with the Dutch fruit growing sector, including by WUR. It is now possible to use drones of a specially developed sensor platform behind the tractor to capture growth and flowering data in maps and then to treat the orchard at tree lever with the help of GSPS.

Consider for instance precision fruit thinning of root pruning at tree level. WUR is testing this type of new technology at Proeftuin Randwijk and on fruit farms. Students in Horticulture/Agriculture and/of Applied Geo-information Sciences can take part in and contribute to this program.

As an example of a possible internship assignment, students will go into the orchards with a sensor platform to collect data and take counts or measurements as verification of the data obtained. Exactly what the assignment will be depend om the time in the growing season. Thus, depending on the period when students are available, customization is possible for the internship.
